Staff Report ASUNM will decide whether to issue a vote of confidence in President David Schmidly on Wednesday, one week before faculty members will voice their lack of confidence in the president. "What we are doing is proposing a resolution that is symbolic, in that it's saying we understand that times are difficult and you (Schmidly) have to make difficult decisions, and we believe in you to make good difficult decisions," said Ashley Fate, president of the undergraduate student government.

The Board of Regents could see major changes if two bills framed by Sen. Tim Keller are approved by the Legislature this spring. One of the bills would require the Senate to approve all of Gov. Dr. Charles Tatlock, dentist and associate professor at UNM, hosted Give Kids a Smile day on Friday at a dental clinic in the Northeast Heights. The annual event provides free dental care to 20 children between 5 and 14 who have severe dental problems.
Staff Report President David Schmidly is inviting University employees to take a vacation without pay. A UNM-issued statement yesterday confirmed a voluntary furlough program will be offered for employees who want to take unpaid leave. "Individuals may find that they could use additional time away from work for family concerns or any number of other reasons," the statement said.
The UNM softball team opened its season with a tough three-game series against the Syracuse Orange and finished the weekend 1-2. The Lobos won Friday's game 5-4 but dropped Saturday's 12-6 and Sunday's 9-8. "This was a good weekend for us, but when we make our own mistakes, a good team is going to capitalize on them like Syracuse did," head coach Ty Singleton said.

Editor, I've been following pretty closely the details regarding the faculty's impending meeting with UNM's version of "The Three Blind Mice": President David Schmidly, Executive Vice President David Harris and Regents President Jamie Koch. The initial refusal of Harris and Koch to show up at the upcoming meeting addressing a possible vote of no confidence shows complete arrogance and lack of understanding from two people who know less about higher education than a wet-behind-the-ears high school teacher getting his or her first class.
Editor, It is very puzzling to teach at a university where the president of the Board of Regents and the University president treat the faculty with open disrespect and as adversaries because they have questioned the diversion of institutional funds. While these administrators say they welcome dialogue, it is clear that both are dismissive of faculty voices and are concerned only that our voices might be heard by the Legislature.

Campus Emergency Services will test its emergency siren at 11:02 a.m. today as part of UNM's emergency-response plan. Emergency Operations Manager Byron Piatt said students should seek shelter in the nearest building when the siren sounds.

Sen. Clint Harden has put forward a legislation package of four bills that focus on helping autistic students from elementary to high school.
