Revamped squad aims for strong season

The urgency in Ty Singleton’s voice makes it clear: The UNM softball team’s head coach is acutely aware of the pressure to win. Coming off a disappointing 13-35 third season for Singleton and the Lobos, the need to win has never been higher. “It’s very important,” Singleton said.

Victory over TCU begins Mountain West run

If the UNM women’s first conference game is any indication, the Lobos might soon prove to the rest of the Mountain West Conference that their 8-1-2 nonconference start wasn’t just for show. In UNM’s conference opener, the Lobos hosted Texas Christian University Saturday at the UNM Soccer Complex and bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 1-0 win.

Scorers need to capitalize on chances

Long stockings couldn’t cover up the UNM women’s soccer team’s Achilles’ heel Friday. The Lobos’ weakness — an inability to capitalize on offensive opportunities — had gone unexposed until Northern Arizona University entered the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lumberjacks became the second team this season to score twice on the Lobos — and the first to hand them a loss, 2-1. On paper, UNM held the advantage in nearly every category against NAU.

Alexis Ball fends off Tulsa midfielder Emily McElrath on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos and Golden Hurricane tied, putting the Lobos at 6-0-1 for the season.

Goalless overtime draw prolongs perfect record

The record-shattering UNM women’s soccer team’s historic ride continues. UNM remains perfect at 6-0-1 and has tied the school record for most matches without a loss after battling Tulsa to a tie at the UNM Soccer Complex on Sunday. The Lobos played through two tough overtimes, but in the end neither team could find the back of the net.

Golf tournament champ started early

As a child, Nick Geyer was given a slew of sporting options. On his sixth birthday, Geyer's father, David, gave him a baseball glove, a hockey stick, a tennis racket, a basketball and a golf club. "We just started to go through all of them, and golf is the one that ended up sticking," Geyer said.

Head coach Ty Singleton, seen here tending to one of his players, had a daunting task this season. Singleton had to work with an inexperienced roster, but the Lobos will be better for it, Singleton said.

Signs of growth after slash-and-burn year

Ty Singleton employed a not-so-common agricultural technique to softball this season. The UNM head coach slashed and burned much of the Lobos' roster at the beginning of the year. He knew it had to be done - even if it risked the immediate future of Lobo softball.
