Editor, I'd like to say good riddance to Rocky Long because, let's face it, paying a coach $750,000 is a joke. That money could be used for academic purposes and hiring and maintaining student employees as well as faculty. That money could be used for lab equipment and other more important things on campus as well.
On Sunday, MTV's "Total Request Live" issued its swan song, and I wasn't listening. Dubbed "TRL" by its hordes of devotees - among whose ranks I used to count myself - the show marked a generation of awkward and not-so-awkward teenagers who tuned in for a decade to watch, fanatically, their favorite "celebs" battle it out for the top spot on the show's daily music video countdown.
UNM is preparing for major campus renovations, but the University may not be able to afford all the buildings it has planned. The University has spent about $14 million this year on 34 renovation projects expected to be completed by 2009. The most expensive project is the Castetter Hall renovation, which benefits the Biology Department, at $7.
If you find yourself seeing the glass as half full and looking for ways to help community members who are less fortunate, the Lobo Optimist Club could be the place for you. The club is a chapter of the nationwide organization that advocates a better lifestyle through community service.
Editor, I am getting tired of reading all of these letters, mostly written by males, condemning the legalization of abortion. The thing is, even if abortion became illegal, it would not stop. It would merely take us back to the bad old days when you had to resort to a back-alley butcher to rid yourself of an unwanted pregnancy.
Editor, In Benjamin Sanchez's column, "Abortion a modern-day injustice," he claims abortion is analogous to slavery. This is absolutely irrational. He is accurate in saying slavery denied black people their "fundamental human rights," but there is no basis for a reasonable comparison between that and the fetus in the womb of a woman.
UNM is trying to keep employees healthy by helping them maintain their weight over the holiday season. Mary Jo Quintana, director of the Employee Health Promotion Program, said 41 employees are enrolled in "Maintain Don't Gain" this year, compared to 35 in 2007.
Third time's the charm for open-mic night. Steven Nery took the reins of the open mic at the Blue Dragon before it closed for good two years ago, had a short-lived run at the now-defunct Hunab Hookah Lounge, and then developed the event into an above-average open mic extending beyond the standard guitar/singer setup.

As a proud UNM instructor, counting the grading time, the course preparation time, the time for teaching, student conference time, committee time and service time - I am paid about 15 cents a month, and there's a freeze on my pennies.
Dance major Andrea Hernandez-Gonzales is an animated performer, and she's quick on her feet. She's getting ready to dance in this weekend's faculty dance show, and she studies physical therapy so she can one day help injured dancers. Hernandez-Gonzales hails from San Antonio.
Mystery will continue to envelop UNM football's coaching vacancy until the position is filled, according to Athletics Director Paul Krebs. UNM has nine more vice presidents than NMSU and outspends State on vice-presidential salaries by about 3 to 1, according to the University's salary book. UNM spends about $3.4 million per year on the salaries of 14 vice presidents and one interim vice president.
An ensemble of UNM students is baring it all onstage. Baring their souls, that is. "Full Frontal Poetry," showing at Theatre X, features the confessional works of 13 actor-writers. The show, directed by Paul Ford, explores the themes of sin, confession, journey and the loss of innocence through poetry, fable, art and nursery rhyme.
Editor, I'd like to point out a couple of things I feel were glossed over in the Daily Lobo article about the increase in pink card fees. First, this is not an across-the-board change for all pink cards. It only applies to pink cards that change credit hour totals.
Students met in the SUB Tuesday to discuss at length a word so controversial, few will say it out loud. UNM's Black Student Union held its second N-word Luncheon on Tuesday, where a panel broke down the issues surrounding the word and its usage. The panel addressed how the word has managed to stick around for so long.
UNM is switching from cooling to heating in dorm rooms, making some students feel like they're roasting alive. Bob Notary, associate director of engineering and energy services at the Physical Plant Department, said turning on the heat is costing the University much more than leaving on cooling systems.
