Poets dig for truth in 'Full Frontal'

An ensemble of UNM students is baring it all onstage. Baring their souls, that is. "Full Frontal Poetry," showing at Theatre X, features the confessional works of 13 actor-writers. The show, directed by Paul Ford, explores the themes of sin, confession, journey and the loss of innocence through poetry, fable, art and nursery rhyme.

Students have suffered most in Creative Writing controversy

Editor, I would like to remind your readers and staff of those who have been most affected by Joy Harjo's resignation and the interdepartmental rift that has been occurring for more than a year now: the creative writing students. Students, after all, are the reason an educational institution exists, right? And most everyone still involved - except for the students - cannot remember this.

Limiting smokers' rights could affect nonsmokers' rights later

Editor, President David Schmidly's proposed smoking ban for the UNM campus is another poor decision in the continued vilification of smokers nationwide. Ever since the report released by the EPA in 1992, anti-smoking activists have been trying to ban smoking and limit smokers' rights under the guise of public health.

Football head coach Rocky Long, right, shakes hands with President David Schmidly after announcing his resignation during a press conference at the Pete McDavid Lounge on Monday.

Long steps down

For 11 seasons, head coach Rocky Long spearheaded UNM's football program. But on Monday, in a room jam-packed with reporters, Long announced he would step down as the Lobos' head football coach. "It's hard for me to leave," he said. "But it's the right thing to do for the program.

People should be more open to Schrader's lifestyle, views

Editor, To me, UNM is a place that is supposed to foster an enlightened and tolerant society. If so, Andres Saenz has missed that part of his education. Why is he so narrow-minded, intolerant and hostile toward gay men? I don't know Saenz, but when he wrote that Don Schrader is "an overtly gay man," I don't think he meant it as a compliment to Schrader or any other gay man.

The UNM women's basketball team celebrates after winning 68-66 during the Travelers Tip-Off Tournament title game against DePaul at The Pit on Monday. Lobo point guard Amy Beggin, center, scored the game-winning basket in the final seconds.

UNM takes win in final seconds of tournament

Forget a barn burner. When the UNM women's basketball team took on DePaul on Monday, the entire Pit nearly caught fire. And not just with excitement - though there was plenty of that. UNM improved to 3-0 on the year, as Amy Beggin proved to be a savior with her last-second layup that propelled the Lobos to a 68-66 victory.

Abortion means killing a baby no matter how you frame it

Editor, Please, Jillian Downer, tell us how society is better because we have unfettered abortion. I ask that you not use slogans, mantras or the other distracting straw-man words that ignore the true issue: Abortion means killing a baby. Downer, your letter in the Nov.

Daily Lobo Spotlight

Daily Lobo: Why did you choose biology? Thanh-Lan Nguyen: They don't have an optometry school here, so I would have to move, and that's the only thing - the downside of it. But, I really like eyes, because I know it can capture a lot of your emotions. DL: How do you mean? TN: I know it's really complicated and it's connected to the brain - that's a really sensitive area.

Students must hold instructors accountable for what they teach

Editor, We, as students, are held to a rigorous standard of academic honesty when performing our coursework, and by that standard, the merits of our work are made unique. The question that every student should begin to ask, however, is to what academic standard of integrity are our instructors held, and how is it enforced and acted upon? When we submit coursework, it can be scrutinized at so many levels to determine whether there is a modicum of plagiarism, if we have falsified results or if in any way we have provided material that is of lesser integrity than the standard requires.

English Department must value individual liberties

Editor, It was troubling to read that Joy Harjo wanted to continue grafting taxes from our citizens and suckling on our tuitions despite her refusal to continue educating us. Just because she found it unbearable to work in an environment that promotes personal freedom doesn't justify her attempt to steal money from the public coffers.

Soccer senior looks to future goals

When most people see a game-winning goal punched into the net, they don't think of a successful high-pressure medical procedure. UNM forward Chris Wright does. As the senior's soccer season comes to a close and he prepares to begin his medical career, Wright draws many similarities between being the leader of a soccer team and becoming a doctor.
