Editor,
I am writing today to congratulate UNM's fraternities for raising money for donations and completing philanthropy. On Nov. 12, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity raised more than $600 that will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research. The fraternity had a Pike auction in the SUB in which it auctioned its members to the highest bidder. In exchange, members will spend three hours doing whatever the bidder wants (within reason). Members will have to clean rooms, wash cars or maybe even go out on a date.
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity recently had a philanthropy event in which the entrance fee was two cans of food. The event had a Halloween theme and raised more than 1,000 pounds of food that were donated to Roadrunner Food Bank. The fraternity also acquired several hundred pounds of canned foods earlier in the semester during a competition between UNM Greeks and NMSU Greeks, which will also be donated to the needy. Members stood outside of grocery stores and asked for donations as well as going door to door.
The FIJI fraternity recently had its annual pumpkin bash in which students passing by Smith Plaza could swing golf clubs and baseball bats at pumpkins for a donation. This event's proceeds were donated to the cause for breast cancer.
I don't want these accomplishments to go unnoticed. The community appreciates the fraternities' work, and we thank you for your continuing efforts. Greeks do a lot of good things for the community and are usually only recognized when they get into trouble. The truth is, the positive things Greeks do heavily outweigh the bad things that sometimes get attention.
