When going gets tough, she thinks of magma

Nicole Thomas traveled the world, learned four languages and held an array of professions before deciding to study science at UNM. The future volcanologist was born in Mexico City and followed her father, an international banker, and mother, a TV/radio journalist, to places like Panama, Jamaica and Hong Kong.

‘we don’t have any fat left’: Committee recommends cutting LAII funding to balance budget

A recent cost-containment recommendation could force the Latin American and Iberian Institute to close up shop. The Provost’s review committee drafted a report recommending the LAII begin to transition from a University-funded to an externally funded budget, but LAII Director Susan Tiano said it is impossible. “Depending on how they cut us, we might have to close our doors,” she said.

ACC plans to demolish old dorms

The Board of Regents approved a housing plan in December that calls for the demolition of a dorm building, two Student Residence Center apartment buildings, a parking lot, two tennis courts and part of lower Johnson Field.

LoboAlert: UNM spends 35K on system

Each year, UNM spends more than $1 per student per year on the LoboAlerts system, even though recipients have only received the alerts twice this school year. Jeff Gilmore, a University purchasing department representative, said UNM dedicates $35,000 in its annual operating budget to maintain the emergency alert system, which was last used Jan.

Schmidly recovers, returns as UNM president

UNM President David Schmidly is back at his post after almost six months of absence spent recovering from operations on an abdominal tumor. On Monday, doctors cleared President Schmidly to return to his duties at the University, and Schmidly said it’s good to be back. “My doctors cleared me to return to work…which has been my wish for the New Year,” he said in a University-wide e-mail.

NM Bowl Running Diary

So much for that riveting regional affair between BYU and UTEP. Turns out, this year’s New Mexico Bowl installment was a dud compared to last year’s overtime shootout between Wyoming and Fresno State.

BYU Romps NM Bowl

Not much has changed at University Stadium on Saturday: A visiting team jumped out to an early lead and never took its foot off the gas pedal. BYU and its swarming defense jumped all over UTEP early in the fifth annual New Mexico Bowl en route to a 52-24 victory. “I was really impressed with the fast start of our team,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

Regents look to tighten belt

The Regents’ Finance and Facilities Committee met Dec. 9 to prepare for the next fiscal year and discuss UNM’s plans to sustain state budget cuts without raising tuition.
