Cleaning museum 'asbestos' they can

From the heavens to wooden crates, the meteorites in UNM’s Meteorite Museum are in storage during an asbestos abatement. Carl Agee, director of the Institute of Meteoritics, said the present Meteorite Museum is a “barren shell,” while nearly every room in Northrop Hall deals with asbestos removal. The specimens have been placed into storage while those efforts take place, he said.

Dual memorials promise closure to families

Part two in a series The National Hispanic Cultural Center has announced the construction of two memorials for two local men who lost their lives during the Vietnam Conflict. New Mexican sculptor Sonny Rivera will be joined by artists Cristina Gonzales and Jacob Sisneros in creating memorials for Pfc. Manuel Mora and Sgt. Pete Padilla.

Barelas Marines' memorial recovers from stall

The fallen sons of two Barelas neighborhood families are finally being memorialized at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Marine Pfc. Manuel Mora and Marine Sgt. Pete Padilla gave their lives in service during the Vietnam conflict. The NHCC promised in 2000 to honor Mora and Padilla with a park and memorial.


	New Mexico assistant coach Craig Snow, center, has accepted the head coaching position at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. Snow spent three seasons with the Lobos.

UNM basketball assistant takes Highlands head coaching job

A New Mexico Highlands spokesman confirmed Thursday afternoon UNM assistant coach Craig Snow has been officially offered and accepted NMHU’s head basketball coaching position. Snow will replace Joe Harge at the helm of the Division II Cowboys, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Association team that went 11-15 last season.

Attorney: Was rape accusation racist?

Videos shown by an attorney to several media outlets may suggest that a woman who accused two UNM football players and a CNM student of raping her may have been the sexual aggressor. On Tuesday, attorney George Anthony Bleus played the videos after rape charges against UNM running back Crusoe Gongbay and CNM student Ryan Ruff were dropped by the District Attorney’s office.

Crown still humble after National Academy honor

Anthropology professor Patricia Crown has enjoyed numerous accomplishments and recognitions in the field of archaeology, and uses her passion for the field to instruct her students. One of Crown’s more recent accomplishments is her election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences as one of its 2013-14 inductees, she said. The call was unexpected – and early.

Former Lobos hopeful for this year's NBA draft

Three former New Mexico men’s basketball players are about to discover the next phase in their playing careers. Ex-Lobos Cameron Bairstow, Alex Kirk and Kendall Williams are available in this year’s NBA draft, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT Thursday in Brooklyn, New York.

Protesters not deterred by arrests

Last week’s City Council meeting started alongside a crowd of about 50 protesters who gathered outside City Hall about an hour before the meeting. Citizens stood across the street chanting demands to see Mayor Richard Berry.

Police oversight reforms postponed

The Albuquerque City Council has postponed two pieces of legislation that would have abolished the Police Oversight Commission. Last week council members discussed a bill sponsored by Councilor Rey Garduño and Councilor Brad Winter that would have abolished the POC on Dec. 31 and replaced it with a Civilian Police Oversight Agency. Winter moved to postpone the matter until Aug. 18.__

Activist professor granted tenure

David Correia recently earned a promotion and tenure, but University administration said his local activism was not a factor in the decision. Correia, who is now an associate professor in the American Studies Department, has been a prominent figure in campaigns regarding the Albuquerque Police Department.

King ready to face Martinez for governor title

Attorney General Gary King won the spot for Democratic Party candidate for the state governor race last night. King beat contenders Lawrence Rael, Alan Webber, Linda Lopez and Howie Morales for a chance to face off against incumbent Gov. Susana Martinez in the Nov. 4 general election.

Thirteen arrested at mayor's office sit-in

Thirteen people were arrested after a sit-in at the Albuquerque mayor’s office Monday evening. One of them, David Correia, a UNM assistant professor for American Studies, was arrested for felony battery on a police officer. Police were called to the mayor’s office in response to protesters who were holding a demonstration and refusing to leave, according to a statement from Janet Blair, an APD spokeswoman.

State's first transgender march draws about 100

At least 100 people gathered at the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico on Thursday afternoon for the first transgender march in the state. The event was intended to strengthen ties between individuals within the transgender community and reach out to those not yet involved, said Paula Kaski, a community member involved in organizing the march.

Admin. service commander to become UNMPD chief

Kevin McCabe, commander of administrative services with the University of New Mexico Police Department, will become police chief on July 1, according to a UNM press release. McCabe will replace Kathy Guimond, who is retiring at the end of June. Guimond served nearly 20 years as UNMPD’s police chief.

Five Democrats in the New Mexico governor’s primary race — Alan Webber, Howie Morales, Lawrence Rael, Linda Lopez and Gary King — participated in a debate Thursday at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Daily Lobo News Editor Chloe Henson tweeted responses from the candidates.

Baseball: Lobos expect MW tournament to be rough

The New Mexico baseball team finished atop the regular season standings for the third year in a row, but unlike the previous seasons, the Lobos won’t be the No. 1 seed at the Mountain West tournament. That distinction belongs to the host team UNLV, who tied UNM for first place in the MW thus becoming co-champions.

Men's Soccer: Leaders emerge for upcoming season

Spring practices give college programs an opportunity to build unity and camaraderie, not just work on tactics and skills. The New Mexico men’s soccer team accomplished that in their recently completed spring sessions, Jeremy Fishbein, Lobo head coach, said Friday.
