Editorial: NYPD's officers should think before they shoot

Boy, Mos Def is going to have a heyday with this one. As 23-year-old Sean Bell was buried on Saturday in Queens, N.Y., another African-American family mourned the loss of a son, father and what was a soon-to-be husband gunned down by the New York Police Department in the most completely absurd amount of bullets - 50 - on Nov. 25.

Tim Duncan's selfless play just the Thing to help Spurs clobber all foes

I love superheroes. I still like dressing up as some variation of them for Halloween, whether it is Drunk Batman who remembers his tool belt but forgets his mask, cape and Batsuit; Safe-sex Superman who hands out green condoms he claims to be laced with Kryptonite, the best STI defender of all time; or Captain Afghanistan, the Captain America of the Middle East.

Editorial: Damning evidence screams for change in ballot format

When you go into that little cubicle Tuesday, lick the tip of your Bic pen, and hunker down in one of those yellow or orange plastic chairs to vote, you'll see that Democrats are listed first in every race on the ballot, no matter the precinct. That's not fair, and according to an editorial in Saturday's New York Times by Stanford professor Jon Krosnick, it's a problem that is easily remedied.

Out, but not yet in the clear

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo In the trunk of UNM student Matt Kenney's car is an aluminum bat with a strip of cloth wrapped around the handle. It's there at his parents' request. Kenney, a gay man, won't get rid of the bat, because he has heard about gay bashings too often to risk driving around ...

Deaf parking officer excels at racquetball

Tim Garcia has been playing racquetball for 14 years. But for him, it's more than just hitting a rubber ball against a wall. "I don't care about myself being deaf when I'm playing," Garcia said through interpreter Jaime Campbell. "The most important thing is for me to stay happy, and I'm happy when I'm playing racquetball." The 33-year-old Garcia has been a student at UNM for six years, five of which he has spent working as a parking officer for Parking and Transportation Services. Between classes and working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shifts five days a week, Garcia spends the rest of his time running around Court 11 in Johnson Center. Although he'll play with anyone that will take him on, he's not your typical recreational player. He plays at the open-professional level - the highest level of five in a racquetball tournament - in tournaments around the state and has seven first-place trophies to show for it.

Library reopens after fire

The reopening of Zimmerman Library on Monday brought a smile to the face of UNM student Rose Ebaugh. She'd been struggling to find places to use computers for the past two months, until the first floor of the library was opened after an April 30 fire torched the basement and damaged thousands of square feet of property.
