Freemasonry hysteria surrounds Jay-Z content
Apparently, the Freemasons have recruited another minion to the Grand Masonic Lodge — this time, it’s Jay-Z.
The dull-witted fodder that Jay-Z is a Freemason, or even worse, a devil worshipper, is making its rounds through the Internet ether.

Sites like Vigilant Citizen (you can thank me for the plug) post a consortium of inane rants about whether Jay-Z consorts with occultists and Freemasons.
The site serves as a conspiracy theorist’s delight, posturing as a place readers can congregate to read exposés on occult symbolism in everything ranging from Pinocchio to Jay-Z.
It’s these uneducated and dangerous suppositions that float around unfiltered, polluting the quality of Internet content.
By choosing to aimlessly speculate on the matter, the site has perpetuated a misinformation campaign, drastically misconstruing the essence of Jay-Z’s music video “Run This Town” off his album The Blueprint 3.
The site has this to say about the video and lyrics: “Jay-Z is asking you to “Pledge your allegiance” to the new ruler and to wear black everything to honor him. Jay’s lyrics contain hints to Freemasonry, which are hidden in the double meaning of some lines. “I gave Doug a grip” means he gave Doug a stack of money, but the double meaning to that line would refer to the Masons’ secret handshakes, which are called “grips.” And who is Doug? Might be Doug Morris.
A bit of research would indicate the so-called references are relatively innocuous. When Jay-Z says he “gave Doug a grip,” he’s referencing his well-documented $5 million contract buyout of Def Jam, which happens to be owned by Universal Music Group. And guess who the chief executive officer of Universal is? Doug Morris.
Aside from the music, Vigilant Citizen preoccupied itself with the attire Jay-Z wore in an interview to explain the making of “Run This Town.”
Jay-Z wears a black sweater with the phrase “Do What Thou Wilt” bannered across the front in white letters — a direct reference to Aleister Crowley, who was denounced by the press at the time as the “wickedest man in the world.”
It comes as no surprise.
Crowley was a hard-core libertarian. Essentially, rap is a rudimentary form of libertarianism, aimed at emancipating expressiveness to the fullest degree.
Still, these contentions touched off a firestorm of raging debate on other Web sites.
NPR.com went as far as to consult Mitch Horowitz, the author of Occult America, for an article that appears on the Web site.
Horowitz doesn’t explain why Jay-Z chooses to incorporate such symbols in his videos, other than to say that the rap legend is “shrewd”
— the insinuation being that it’s simply a genius marketing ploy intended to stir controversy and conversation.
Further fueling this nonsensical debate is Jay-Z’s latest video, “On to The Next One.” The video, which shows a montage of loosely associated Masonic symbols, is believed to be propagating occult and Masonic propaganda.
But thinking rationally about the likelihood that Jay-Z is a part of the Mason fraternity leads me to be dismissive. Why? Simply, the relationship is entirely dichotomous: a high-profile celebrity as a member in a clandestine organization, which prides itself on secrecy and exclusivity.
You’d think someone would dime Jay-Z out. Furthermore, if he was a member, would he profanely plaster his affiliation with the group in mass-distributed music videos?
For the record, there is a reason Jay-Z implements the use of these symbols, but it’s neither because he is a Freemason, nor is it strictly a business ploy aimed at generating revenue and hype.
Jay-Z is making a definite statement about the nature of his music.
Since the installment of his latest CD, The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z has talked extensively about imprinting his influence on the music industry. The Blueprint 3 is Jay-Z’s manifesto, a Magna Carta of sorts.
In popular culture, the Freemasons are thought to be covertly
running America; that they are behind-the-scenes puppet masters pulling strings and working toward the arrival of the New World Order.
Thus, the tie in with Jay-Z’s music is simple.
Given his countless boasts of supremacy, Jay-Z is clearly a snooty elitist. Appropriately, he’s consolidated his own record label, Roc Nation, and has signed an exclusive number of artists — eight, including Jay-Z. Together, these artists are ushering in rap’s New World Order, a fundamental restructuring of rap music.
Or they’re secretly planning a global takeover. Oh, my god — one of Jay’s most famous songs. The signs are there.

How come all the non masons see all these so called illusions to Masonry while us Masons see nothing even close to our symbology.Jay Z must be having a good laugh at y’all.

Can anyone define the “New World Order?” How is it supposed to be bad?
Also, many fraternities, including the Boy Scouts, have grips and signs. Maybe Jay Z is a Boy Scout? Or Phi Beta Kappa?

What an incredible article. You manage to point out evidence of Jay-Hova’s influence by esoteric fraternities… and then build straw man arguments to convince the profane there’s nothing to see here. Regardless if he is a mason or not. There is no doubt he is influenced by the esoteric secret societies, and they recognize the work he is doing. Think about it dummies. What’s a gangster rapper doing meeting with the leader of the U.N.?
Just keep telling yourself the global financial elite, global institutions, and esoteric secret societies love you. Just keep listening to ROC A FELLA records and telling yourself Jay-z is real. What a joke!

I believe the word Initiation is something we need to look upon. Mr. Carter is way beyond what we think, a $500 million dollar character? We need to be aware about how we go about things, being drawn in isn’t a good thing..

I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I am open-mined enough to believe that there is more going on than is recognized by the devouring pubic. I have no idea if JZ is a Free Mason, or connected with some other secret organization with a reputation for partaking in satanic ritual on the inner circles, but I do know a bit about Crowley, who said: “Do as though wilt is the whole of the law.”
In metaphysical circles this is a reference to the use of various energies (some call Magick)and that A.C. was promoting it’s indiscriminate use to accomplish an end by any means available. The sister view to Crowley’s statement is the Wiccan Rede which states: “Do as thou will, lest it harm none.” Ideologically, these are two very different perspectives. Crowley’s allows for the use of forces that are less than desirable to produce an outcome, while the Wiccan Rede specifies that harming the self or others by use of the lower forces is not okay, no matter what the outcome.
As a side note, I think the author of this article was so biased against and dismissive of the opposing view (not arguing the validity of the conspiracy claims b/c I don’t know) that I didn’t believe s/he was even giving me all the valid info. Clearly the writer had a strong agenda that they didn’t even try to be subtle about. This is an opinion column at best (just like this letter)… certainly it isn’t unbiased reporting.

Ok so I’ve read a couple of articles on Vigilant Citizen. These are my impressions. The articles were
1- thought provoking
2- well researched
3- relatively unbiased
YOUR article was heavily biased, poorly researched (you clearly did not read or understand many articles) and you probably have an agenda.
You should learn a thing or two from Vigilant Citizen.

Holy cow, Arianna, so at the end of every argument you got to say: But the opposing point is just as strong…?
I for one am in favor of taking down these paranoiacs wherever they be found. And sorry, that’s not open for debate.

One further point …
It looks to me like Avilucea is a music fan more than he is anything else. George, does that make your argument, music SHOULD be open to conspiracy hysteria?

I actually wrote a 3-part series on this entire topic. Not as concise as this, but I think a lot more thorough at demystifying the madness. (not to take anything away from this article) While I disagree with the insinuation about Jay-Z being a Freemason I believe it’s because we disagree on the nature of Freemasons. I don’t believe them to be some secret world-domination cult. I do believe it’s quite possible for one to be a part of Freemasonry and the public not really know. I do, however, agree that people are going wayyyy beyond reality in their arguments about this and other conspiracy theories.

Finally an article about the Vigilant Citizen site! To begin, I was noticing that everything about music and their videos were getting darker and darker. I was just wondering why I felt this eerie feeling. So my friend told me that they are symbols and secret messages behind all these videos and lyrics and also told me about Vigilant Citizen. I think what he is doing is letting us know what these symbols mean and not telling us that you should go riot against them. He’s just telling us that we should be aware of all the symbols of these evil cults. I certainly did not know who the Free Masons and occultists were because they are not talked about anymore but from reading VC I now understand why. We forget all about the evil in this world and we want everything to be nice and dandy. We don’t want any satanic rituals or people being controlled. So we are ignorant to the symbols and their meanings and that’s why they put the it in the music and music videos. Music has a huge impact on all of us, so if someone is putting all this evil in music they are wanting us to be evil. A scary thought, but now from reading VC I’m glad that I am aware of what is around me.

“Simply, the relationship is entirely dichotomous: a high-profile celebrity as a member in a clandestine organization, which prides itself on secrecy and exclusivity.”
1-Masonry is not “clandestine”
2-There are thousands of “high-profile” celebrities in Masonry
YOU are the one propagating dangerous suppositions. Do you have experience in the music industry? Do you know occult symbolism. If you dont know what you are bashing, just shut up.

And please, don’t tell me to go do my research, because I have. I don’t identify with them, but I also don’t see anything wrong with them. There are worse things Jay could associate him self with.

I’ve read some articles on Vigilant Citizen and I’ve found them infinitely more insightful than this garbage of an article. What was the purpose of this article anyways? You seem to have some sort of personal vendetta against Vigilant Citizen, hence the gratuitous bashing. As a “journalist”, did you consider contacting Vigilant and maybe obtaining his side of the story? That is what we call “unbiased journalism”. Anyways, at least I’ve discovered a great site.

As a Freemason I always wondered why so many call it a secret society when our buildings are conspicuously marked, the Shriners march in parades and many of our brethren proudly wear symbols of the fraternity, openly in daily life. Next time ask a Mason rather than using that infallible research tool “the internet”.

Are you guys for real? Jay-Z is no more Freemason than Harry Potter is Satan. Are you that starved for excitement? BTW, I had to check out this VC website. Its premise is intriguing, oddly enough: symbols rule the world, not words nor laws. Unfortunately the analyses mustered in support of this premise are, in fact, insane rants. Finally, while I am convinced that rap and hip-hop are God’s revenge against the white dog, I am just as sure Satan has nothing to do with it.

Oh brother. Isaac, believe whatever you want to believe, denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.

This is pitiful. Here you ALMOST actually admit there’s truth to the accusations of occult references Jay Z makes and then you make it into a victimization of that stupid 3rd political party, “Rap music and libertarianism are GROOVY and hardcore! They’re just expressing their freedom and Vigilant is THE MAN trying to hold everyone down with fascism!”
“If he was a member, would he profanely plaster his affiliation with the group in mass-distributed music videos?”
I wouldn’t think so, but I do know that Masons pledge themselves to Freemasonry above everything else and they believe strongly in idols and symbolism, sort of as “magic amulets” or “lucky charms,” and probably even bad ones too. I also understand that many historical Masons went on to put Freemasonry symbols in just about everything they did after they’d joined. Vigilant even has an article “The Hidden Hand that Shaped History” about a hand gesture they’d do throughout history, but I’m not gonna speculate on what their aims are or how powerful they’re supposed to be.
Do a GoogleImage search for “roc a wear mason shirt,” see what you find then.

All you Vigilant Citizen supporters really should read some reputable books on Occult Symbolism and Freemasonry and you’d find that VC is waaaaay off in his assumptions.
I’ve read many of VC’s articles and laughed all the way through its juvenile expostitons, and the dribbling, sycophantic praise in the comments sections. “Oh, yes VC! Give us more! We always look to you for info on this!” Can’t you see, that VC’s building a Cult of Personality around himself?
More importantly, I heavily criticised VC’s interpretations of symbolism in the comments section of one particular article, and it was swiftly deleted. Granted, he lets through the odd dissenting comment for appearances, but well constructed criticisms never see the light of day for more than a few minutes.

In the most simple terms possible to be a mason is to be a better man. not to be better than anyone else but better in yourself. it is a way to build a better relationship to God. A black Muslim Mason feels a closer bond to Allah than a random Muslim. A jew.. a Christian and so on. Is JayZ a Mason… chances are not that he is, by his actions alone. Most instance the nice old man who opened the door for you or the everyday joe who offers to lend you a hand has a higher chance of being a mason.
