New Mexico's university system needs rethinking

Last updated: 08/30/10 12:23am

Editor,

It is high time to de-politicize our regents’ appointment. A statewide, nonpartisan election, with staggered terms, will bring out some of our best scientists, academicians and business and economics leaders. And if it takes a constitutional amendment to an ancient (1912) rule — bring it on!

No more used car salesmen who must sign an undated letter of resignation before taking office. Also, institute a single New Mexico system of higher education, similar to California: UNM -Albuquerque, UNM-Las Cruces, UNM-Socorro, etc.
Make it one president for the system, with a chancellor at each branch. One immediate advantage will be the elimination of expensive duplicate programs.

No more pro-Israel advocacy at UNM either, Shlomo.

No more pro-Israel advocacy? There’s little of that at UNM. Cut out the anti-Israel advocacy, and then you’d see a noticeable improvement. But Karni was talking about university regents, not Israel.

Good idea, but it fails to consider New Mexico’s claim to fame- most folks call it corruption.UNM exists to placate the the likes of Locksley, Krebs and Schmidly. If we embraced a unified upper education tomorrow,it would take years to realize the monetary savings these snake oil salesmen, criminals and incompetents have already stolen, under the guise of honest work, from taxpayers students and the folks who donate to the alumni funds. These small time Bernie Madoff’s are succeeding beyond their wildest expectations. And everyone thought the post Cival War carpetbaggers were bad; historians should look at these three greedy ignorant, greedy clowns before they pass judgment on the original carpetbaggers.

Hello, anybody home?

Need to monitor your discussion threads here. You have comments way off-topic, and worse yet, commercial spammers.

Lawrence-

Do you for some reason think the readers are incapable of judging what is germane and not germane to post? You appear to be advocating a subtle form of censorship insomuch as you are declaring what is and what is not relevant.

Lobo Joe: Please explain how an ad (since removed – perhaps you missed it) from a spammer for an electronics product, or the alledged activities or previous posts of Dr. Karni on a topic that has nothing to do with UNM are *germane to the discussion.

I was responding to the first two posts (and the spam ad which the editor did remove after I pointed it out). I agree with you that Schmidley, Krebs, and Locksley are “clowns.”

A little too quick with the defensiveness, Joe. And removing spam is never “censorship.”
