E-mail merger improves ease of use

UNM Hospitals, Information Technologies and the Health Sciences Center will merge GroupWise e-mail systems Friday.

Groups to rally in search of reason

In a world gone mad, Douglas Daugherty said, the University needs a “A Day of Sanity.” Daugherty, the event organizer, said violent outbreaks have produced a need for community dialogue. He said what happened Monday at a debate in Kentucky is an all-too familiar reminder. There, a Rand Paul volunteer stepped on a liberal activist’s head after she was tackled. “Sitting on the sideline is a complicit act in socially reproducing the status quo,” Daugherty said. “We must remember there is no such thing as a ‘real world’ out there. The real world is a social construction, and only through the social deconstruction of that world can we begin the long and arduous task of producing a better world for our children and grandchildren and future generations of humanity.” OCT 28

Event offers helping hand to homeless veterans

The UNM Veterans Resource Center hosted the Stand Down and Project Hand-Up 2010 to assist homeless veterans.
The project helped more than 400 homeless veterans with VA claims, counseling, food, health, showers, free haircuts and provided a warm breakfast and dinner, VRC Director Elise Wheeler said. “We can offer a hand to those who have raised their right hand,” she said. OCT 26

New Mexico Republican candidates visited campus on Thursday to campaign and tell students how they plan to fix corruption and the economic crisis. Matthew Chandler, New Mexico’s 9th Judicial District Attorney, is running for Attorney General and said political corruption has reached epidemic levels. SEP 27

Series of brief talks forms giant brainstorm

Seems like study guides exist for everything these days, even life. Tim Nisly, the curator and host of TEDxABQ, said the short, carefully prepared talks given at Saturday’s event at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino are “the Cliff’s Notes for life.” “The idea is if you put a lot of intelligent people in a room and help them share ideas … the conversation as a result will make a major difference in the world,” Nisly said. TED, a non-profit organization that began nearly 25 years ago, brings the brightest minds together to spark innovation, Nisly said, and he hoped the ignition would occur in Albuquerque. SEP 20

Despite award, Anderson stresses improvement

Hispanic Business Magazine has named UNM’s Anderson School of Management the nation’s sixth best graduate business school for Hispanic students for the second year in a row. SEP 15

School gets female dean

For the first time in its history, UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning has a woman as its new dean.  Geraldine Forbes Isais, the architecture program director since 2005, was promoted to dean at the end of spring 2010 semester and assumed her role this summer. She succeeds Roger Schluntz, who served as dean for UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning for more than a decade.
