UNM senior men’s tennis player Takeshi Itoh and senior Ryley Webb of the UNM women’s golf team are this week’s New Mexico Daily Lobo male and female Athletes of the Week.
At the Mountain West Conference men’s tennis championships this weekend, Itoh won two singles matches over ranked opponents and combined with Bart Scott for a doubles win to help UNM finish in third place. On Friday, Itoh led the University of Nevada at Las Vegas’ Nenad Zivkovic 6-3, and 2-0 in the second set before the 92nd-ranked Zivkovic retired due to injury. Itoh defeated San Diego State University’s Oliver Maiberger, ranked 22nd, 6-1, 6-1 Saturday to earn one of UNM’s three singles points.
In Sunriver, Ore., April 23-25, Webb guided UNM to its second consecutive Mountain West Conference championship by winning the individual portion of the tournament with a three-day score of 209 (-4). It was Webb’s first tournament win as a Lobo. She was later named to the Mountain West’s all-conference team.
