Kendra Jackson

Senate candidate Kendra Jackson wants her voice to be heard, even if she is a freshman.

Jackson, who is majoring in elementary education, said she is running for Senate because she feels the student body on campus needs to be represented.

"I'm a general student at the University with needs and if I feel like I need to address them, I should have a right to," Jackson said. "Even though I'm a freshman, I have concerns and needs that need to be addressed."

She said that as a candidate running with the rest of The People slate, she would try to accomplish that.

Jackson said the role of a senator is to address the student's needs, concerns and issues. She said if students feel underrepresented they should know they can go to the senate and talk with them.

Jackson said the senators should respect and listen to the student's concerns and be accountable for what they do say to students. She said her goal is for the whole student body to work as one.

She said that as a senator, she would go to student organizations and actually listen to what they have to say and what they feel needs to be done on campus.

Jackson said one of the biggest challenges ASUNM will face next year is communication between the Senate and student groups.

"It would be trying to listen to the student's views and standpoints on what they feel needs to change and just changing things on campus from what the senate already is now," she said.

When asked to name UNM's president, three members of the Board of Regents and three student organizations, Jackson identified Bill Gordon as president; Judith Herrera and Jack Fortner as regents; and the Nutrition Club, the Women's Health Interest Group and the Finance and Investment Association as student groups.
