Nick Huffmyer

Nick Huffmyer is running for a Senate position because he thinks his college experience is too short not to.

“I really need to capitalize on the time I do have and what better way to get involved than ASUNM,” he said.

Huffmyer, a junior majoring in criminology, said that being a senator means accurately representing what he and the other senators feel for student interests and to represent the average student who is not a member of the Associated Students of UNM.

He said his desire to be an honest and fair representative and his will to work hard qualifies him to be a senator. He added that he is also involved in several student groups, but didn’t feel that should be a factor in his campaign for office.

Huffmyer said he would like to help connect students with ASUNM through the Internet, using Web sites such as the UNM general Web site to help inform students about ASUNM goings on.

He said that on the UNM Web site he’d like to help create a link that will contain information about ASUNM, senator profiles and surveys about proposed bills not up for voting yet so students can voice their opinions on them.

“We can get an opinion before it’s set up to be across the president’s desk,” Huffmyer said.

He said the biggest challenge facing ASUNM now are dealing with racial issues currently plaguing the Senate.

“The racial issues right now are overboard and our biggest challenge will be overcoming those issues within the Senate and finding ways to work with them,” Huffmyer said.

When asked to name the UNM president, three members of the Board of Regents and three student groups, Huffmyer identified William Gordon as president, Toliver, Willard and Anaya as regents and the Coalition, M.E.Ch.A. and the Black Student Union as student groups.
