Editorial: Learn more about Lobo at open house

With the fall semester officially under way, now seems as good a time as any to introduce new and returning students to the Daily Lobo.

Sure, we hope you pick it up daily, read it and pass it on to someone else, but the paper offers numerous other opportunities and resources.

The Daily Lobo is an independent student newspaper that has been around since 1895 and is funded by student-sold advertising and a small percentage of student fees.

More than 100 students work daily to produce the newspaper that you picked up today. They are pushing themselves to live up to professional standards and want feedback from readers, both positive and negative.

How do readers respond?

We hope they do so constructively through a phone call or a letter to the editor expressing their opinions. Letters can be e-mailed to lobonews@unm.edu, faxed to 277-6228, submitted online at www.dailylobo.com or mailed or delivered in person at room 138 of Marron Hall.

Many people call asking how to get their information into the newspaper. News releases can be sent to the same contact information listed for letters to the editor. Community members also may purchase a display or classified advertisement to get their message to readers. The classifieds advertising office also compiles the on campus section of the Daily Lobo, which is a free listing of events at UNM. For more advertising information, call 277-5656 or e-mail loboads@unm.edu.

The Daily Lobo also has plenty of room for students interested in being reporters, photographers, columnists or cartoonists. Our goal is to never turn a student away who is willing to work hard and accept constructive criticism. Producing a daily newspaper isn’t easy and we always welcome more help.

In another effort to make your student newspaper more accessible, the Daily Lobo staff is holding an open house Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. Staff members will be available to answer questions, offer job applications and give tours of the newspaper offices.

I hope I answered some of the more common reader questions in this editorial, but if not, don’t hesitate to call or stop by the newsroom.
