Editor,
I have not yet seen “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” so I have no idea whether Nick Cage has a convincing Italian accent but he ought to.
His real name is Nicholas Coppola.
His uncle, Frances Ford Coppola made “Godfather I,” “Godfather II” and “Godfather III.” His grandfather Carlo wrote the score for “Godfather I” and Godfather II.” His aunt, Talia Shire starred in “Godfather I” and “Godfather II.” His cousin Sofia Coppola played Michael Corleone’s daughter in “Godfather III.”
His Uncle Frances also markets a line of olive oil and wine when not making movies or cooking.
The Coppolas, though American, are certainly of Italian descent and fairly recent arrivals in America as these things go.

I believe Nick speaks Italian. I know his father, his aunt and his uncle do.
Saying that Nicolas Cage is unbelievable as an Italian means that either his acting skills have taken a sudden nosedive or Sim¢n Trujillo’s review in Monday’s Daily Lobo is a little suspect.
I can more easily believe that Penelope Cruz isn’t convincingly Greek. On the other hand, her mother’s entire family could have come from five miles north of Calamara.
I suspect Sim¢n drew conclusions based on Cruz and Cage’s surnames. Never assume.
