Fraternity to build on its service skills this weekend

Members of Omega Delta Phi fraternity will help build a Habitat for Humanity house Saturday, continuing the group's commitment to volunteering and community service.

The fraternity members will roll up their sleeves and help construct a home at Central Avenue and Atrisco Road.

The Omega Delta Phi fraternity at UNM, which chartered in 1999, plans on putting all or most of their efforts into community service, members said.

Robert Tafoya, the group's community service chairman, said members strive to make a difference and accomplish as much as they can in the community.

"We try to diversify ourselves in all aspects of community service," he said. "We just want to offer our help and support because we think it is important."

Tafoya said that last year, the fraternity helped with construction work so that a woman and her son could have a home.

"I helped put in a fence and some of the other guys help put in some posts, it was just some basic construction work," he said.

Tafoya said he is unsure who will move into this next house and that a family will probably not be chosen until the last stage of construction.

On Saturday, the fraternity participated in two community service events - the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk and America's Walk for Diabetes.

Art Sanchez, the fraternity's new member chairman, said he enjoyed the walk.

"We got there at 6:30 a.m. and basically we helped out by setting up tables and balloons," he said. "We were there all day. I thought it was a good event."

Tafoya said the group will be participating in other events and is planning a benefit dinner and workshop to educate community members about domestic violence.

Terrence Gallegos, the fraternity's chapter president, said the group has 14 active members and two pledges. Gallegos said the group already has completed more than 180 hours of community service around the Albuquerque area this semester.

"For a fraternity that small, 180 hours is a lot," Gallegos said. "We just really want to help."

The Habitat for Humanity house will begin its first stage of construction on Saturday at 8 a.m.

The Habitat for Humanity office is on Montgomery Boulevard and accepts volunteers who are willing to help with construction. For more information about volunteering, call 265-0057.
