Health center offers flu shots for winter

UNM's Student Health Center is providing several temporary clinics on main campus beginning today so students, faculty and staff can get vaccinated for the upcoming flu season.

The UNM community can get flu shots at these clinics until Nov. 7 or whenever the center runs out of the vaccine.

Frankie Maley, a registered nurse for Allergies and Immunization at UNM, said students, especially those living in dorms, people traveling out of the country and those with a high level of stress should seriously consider receiving the vaccine. It is important for students and faculty to take advantage of the clinics because stress levels can contribute to the likeliness of getting the flu, she said.

Maley said the shots do not guarantee that people will not get the flu virus but do reduce the chance of becoming ill.

"New Mexico's biggest flu time is between December and January," she said. "With the vaccine, there is a 70 to 90 percent chance that you will not get the flu."

The vaccine lasts through the winter season and only one shot is necessary, she said.

The shots will cost $3 for those with Student Health Insurance Plan A and $15 for others who are interested. Cash, checks and charges to students' accounts are acceptable forms of payment.

"We are not sure how long the supply will last, so come early," Maley said.

She added that any students who have questions about the shots are welcome to come to the Student Health Center for answers.

Six buildings on campus will offer the clinics, along with the Student Health Center itself. Each of the clinics will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on their scheduled days, unless otherwise noted.
