Editor,
As an American, I am mortified by the actions of certain UNM students and staff, as well as members of our state Legislature.
I happen to believe that the rights defined in the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, also known as the Bill of Rights, are what make this country great.
Now there are some who quote the second amendment at least once a day; they however, seem to have forgotten the one that comes before it.
It is the one that declares an American's right to free speech. We don't have to like what others say and we certainly don't have to agree with them.
We do have to grant them the same rights that we would ask for ourselves.

To keep ourselves from becoming that which we are fighting we must remember what makes us different from them. If we start taking away people's right to speak, it is a small step to taking away all of their rights. I do not wish to live in a totalitarian state, and I would hope that those who are calling for the destruction of the First Amendment will consider just what kind of precedent they are trying to set.
