Friday, the National Hispanic Cultural Center will present the public reception for "Treasures of Spanish Colonial Painting," 38 paintings created by artists of the new world from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The paintings represent the introduction of Christianity to the new world by Spanish missionaries - using images of the saints, episodes from the Bible and numerous regional incarnations of the Virgin Mary for public and private devotion.

Although imperialistic in nature, the paintings are grand in theme and scope, providing a fascinating look at the portrayal of Christian iconography.

The reception begins at 6 p.m., with the display opening to the public on Saturday at 10 p.m. and running through Apr. 14. The National Hispanic Cultural Center is at 1701 Fourth St. SW. For more information, call 246-2261.
