LETTER: Greeks have more crime problems than they let on

Editor,

FBI statistics say that 80 percent of all gang rapes that occur in the United States happen in fraternities. An anthropological case study of Greek life by Peggy Reeves Sanday, "Fraternity Gang Rape: Sex, Brotherhood and Privilege on Campus" concludes that sororities are often complicit in the cover-up and sometimes even the set-up of rape cases in fraternity houses.

Yet the students who attend and support these institutions never think to address their own alcoholic, abusive image.

All we ever hear from the Greeks on campus is GPA and community service. Yet I notice the GPA of even the house with the highest GPA is never given. Nor has anyone ever thought to compile numbers on the amount of community service performed by non-Greek students.

Are the Greeks really that extraordinary when it comes to giving their time?

I'm very happy that they have found friends of similar natures, and its really cool that they are forced to keep their grades up and help the community. Now, what do they have to say for themselves that is not designated in their charters; and what are they doing to get themselves out of the FBI crime statistics?
