LETTER: Voters opposed to APS improvement

Editor,

Last night I watched the news at 10 p.m. and was completely disgusted by one of their stories: Albuquerque voters had voted against the APS Bond issue.

I am forced to ask, how do you think things are going to get better? APS is far behind other districts in many areas. This bond issue would have improved the buildings that are literally falling apart, placed a computer in every classroom, made fire protection up to standards and so much more.

Apparently voters had a problem with these improvements. A small extra tax to worry about is your problem? We had so many complaints about the state of APS and here was the chance to do something about it. We let the school board suspend superintendent Brad Allison while those left on the board, whose members have been there for half a century, run our public school system?

The board has been ineffective for years and finally a superintendent makes attempts at reform. Now, a chance for the voters of Albuquerque to attempt improvements. I hope these voters are prepared to tell the overcrowded class of 9-year-olds who had to move class to the cafeteria because asbestos was leaking from the ceiling that they needed the extra 50 cents that this tax would have cost.

It's not Allison or the government or anything else that is hurting APS, it's the voters in Albuquerque.
