Editor,
I am writing in response to the article appearing in the Daily Lobo on March 4 concerning the UNM ultimate Frisbee team. I am a strong supporter of UNM Frisbee, and I was at their tournament this weekend. I did not enjoy, nor did I appreciate the content of this article.
This is the first time I have ever seen an article on the sports page in which the focus of the article did not seem to be on sports, but rather on a social event. I would have much rather read an article which reflected the hard work and practice this team goes through each and every week instead of the garbage that was printed in your paper. Many other sports teams at this school throw parties, and none of them get written about in the paper.
According to your story "the cops raided the party." A raid is defined as, "A sudden forcible entry into a place by police." It is true that the police did break up the party, but the idea that they "raided" the party is both inaccurate and false.
I also wonder why you chose the term "rowdy" to describe the teams from other schools. Were you at the tournament watching these teams being "rowdy?" It does not seem to be a proper term to describe teams that were showing great determination and physical abilities on the Frisbee field.
This article has portrayed an inaccurate picture of both this team and this sport as just a bunch of alcohol consuming hooligans rather than the true athletes that they are. It does not give due justice to the fact that these people work very hard and diligently to achieve success in their sport and to represent this school.
