To all fellow graduate and professional students, welcome to all our new and returning colleagues. I am very excited to be serving you as this year's GPSA president. I am beginning my fourth year as a dual degree student in Law and Latin American Studies. I obtained my bachelor's in Latin American Studies from Vassar College.
Although I am originally from southern Texas, I am now an adopted New Mexican. This is a particularly exciting year to serve as president of the Graduate and Professional Students Association. We are sad, however, to lose Bill Dials as GPSA council chair. He did an outstanding job this last year. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors. At our October meeting there will be an election for a new GPSA council chair.
This will be a remarkable year for GPSA. At our Sept. 7 meeting we will be forming a committee to nominate three people to fill a two-year student regent appointment. We are also taking applications for GRD administrator and need to fill various University Committee appointments including a representative for the Student Fee Review board. There are several GPSA standing committees that need your help. Also, consider representing your department as a GPSA council representative at monthly meetings. Additionally, this year we plan to host a variety of social events including a tailgate party for Homecoming and an open house at our new offices in January. As always we cannot be successful without your participation.

I encourage all of you to consider participating and contact our office with any questions or concerns. The GPSA Web site remains a wealth of information at www.unm.edu/~gpsa. Look for my monthly updates in the Lobo and on the GPSA list serv.
Best of luck this coming year and always.
