Editor,
So-called oxygen bars often tout health benefits of providing additional, and even " 100 percent pure-grade medical oxygen" to the body to help body and mind by cleaning the system of toxins, increasing energy and stamina, and reducing stress. While one cannot argue with the power of suggestion and the subjective benefits of things that can make you feel better, there is no evidence that healthy people can benefit from inhaling oxygen other than the 21 percent of oxygen found in the air we breathe.
Referring to the article on Tuesday, Aug. 27, by Tina Larkin, I would have to agree, " Inhaling 100 percent pure medical grade oxygen . . . is entertaining." But I wouldn't agree, " it is as good for the brain." Aromatherapy is certainly beneficial and relaxing, but the oxygen is a problem, especially 100 percent oxygen.
While no one would disagree that oxygen is necessary to life, most people don't realize that it isn't always beneficial. Of course, all cells require oxygen to generate energy, but in the process create unusable oxygen molecules called "free radicals" which attack healthy molecules in the body in hopes of stealing an electron to help stabilize them. This causes cell and tissue damage to the body. Over time free radicals crack or damage cells and structures within the cell, including DNA. The damaged DNA can then cause new cells to be abnormal or unhealthy, causing damage to the body. The damaged cells make us vulnerable to cancer, heart disease, cataracts, a weakened immune system, aging, and now we believe, Alzheimer's.
The best way to reduce stress and maintain energy is to get plenty of exercise, a proper healthy diet with plenty of plant foods, and daily exercise. Save your money and walk to the store to buy some fresh produce.
