Editor,
I keep hearing various excuses why Coach Rocky Long and the Lobos lost to the Aggies Saturday.
There is no reason why Coach Long and the Lobos shouldn't beat NMSU every year. The Lobos have better athletes, better facilities, play in a much more competitive football conference, have more fan support, and have more financial resources.
The only reason why they lost Saturday, and will continue to lose, is lack of team discipline. Penalties, several dropped passes, poor execution running backs not hitting the hole with explosion, and missed tackles are just a few examples of how the Lobos emphasized their lack of team discipline.
And these just didn't happen against the Aggies, they happened against Baylor, Air Force and N.C. State as well. The Lobos were lucky that Baylor actually made more mistakes then they did.
What is most disappointing is that there is so much potential for UNM to be a big football school. They play in a medium-sized city with no professional sports and already have a decent amount of fan support despite there losing record.

If 30,000 people show up for a below-average Lobos team playing a below-average Baylor team, how many would show up for an above average Lobos team playing an above average Texas Tech team on national TV?
The bottom line is Coach Long has the resources for a successful program, but seems to settle for mediocre performances. Mistakes equal losses.
