We have bad drivers in New Mexico? No way.
The Albuquerque Journal did an interesting piece asking people for their opinions on how they feel about New Mexico drivers and the responses were for the most part honest. New Mexico drivers are some of the worst in the country.
It's difficult to pinpoint any one problem - although cell-phone use while driving seems to be a big pet peeve for many. Personally, I go a little crazy when people blast their horns at me when I'm obeying simple traffic laws, such as stopping at red lights before making right turns. Or when people try to kill me while merging into my car from another lane. Or when people of a certain age go 25 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone and it's the middle of rush hour so you can't get around them.
Then we have the drunk drivers who seem to always be cruising down Central Avenue at 2 p.m. They weave in and out of lanes and make sudden stops and never use their turn signals. It's great fun being behind them.
Cell phones are actually the least of my problems with N.M. drivers. Most of the time it's a struggle just staying sane while driving anymore. You get so angry with some people that you want to hit something (with your vehicle.) Since you can't do much else except rein in your temper and try to get along without getting into a major accident, it gets to be a routine.
I do think, however, that all N.M. drivers need to take at least one anger-management class at some point because believe me, it helps.
