LETTER: Many New Mexicans lack health insurance

Editor,

We would like to applaud Mayor Chavez for declaring the first week in October as Universal Health Care Awareness Week and recognizing that all New Mexicans deserve healthcare.

One in four New Mexicans does not have health insurance, according to the most recent census count. In fact, 80 percent of the uninsured come from working families. Studies show that when people don't have health insurance they don't get the medical care they need. This leads to unnecessary financial burden on the system, greater vulnerability of the public to infectious diseases, and higher rates of preventable deaths.

Whether it is yourself, your children, a friend, a neighbor, or a coworker, we all know someone who doesn't have health insurance. We need a healthcare system in New Mexico that covers everyone!

Please show your support for promoting coverage for all New Mexicans by participating in the Walk, Roll, and Run to Cover Everyone on Oct. 6, at 1p.m. in front of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. For more information call 907-6655.
