LETTER: Pi Kappa members apologize for mural

Editor,

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity participated in a chalk mural competition for the 2002 UNM Homecoming activities. The purpose of this contest was to create a mural that represented the UNM Homecoming theme, "Homecoming on the Range."

At the end of the contest, it came to our attention that some people were offended by what was depicted in our mural. We apologize for the part of our mural that offended members of the community. We want to let those who were offended know that we had no intentions of portraying an image that would be considered offensive.

This has been an educational experience for us and we would like to extend an invitation for anyone who would like to provide us with further education regarding cultural sensitivity issues. We would also like to make ourselves available to apologize to anyone who has been offended by our mural.

Thank you.
