Presidential search advertisement approved

Search subcommittee also approves search firm contract

The UNM Presidential Search Subcommittee met Monday for a short meeting where committee members approved the position announcement and the search firm contract.

Committee members edited the presidential position advertisement, which will appear in the Chronicle on Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education and the Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education, said UNM Public Relations Director Frank Martinez.

The advertisement, which was originally written as a full page of text, will read:

"The University of New Mexico invites nominations and expressions of interests for the position of President. The Board of Regents is seeking a President whose leadership experience, skills, and qualifications are uniquely suited to the University of New Mexico and the challenges it faces in the coming years.

The committee also approved a contract with the Virginia-based search firm of A.T. Kearney, Inc.

Nick Estes, a lawyer for University Counsel, said that usually a final version of the contract will be presented to the regents to be signed, but the search committee is the main body that deals with it.

The four-page contract outlines the search firm's duties, including to create and maintain an electronic database of all nominations and applications; maintain all identifying information about candidates in strict confidentiality, furnishing such information only to the search committee; assist the search committee in developing criteria for screening candidates; assist in the search and screening process; and help set up and coordinate interviews with selected candidates.

The contract states that the search firm will be paid $90,000 and expenses such as candidate and consultant travel, advertising, online research and express mail charges are reimbursed on an actual "cost-to-us" basis.

The subcommittee also voted to dissolve itself as all presidential search business will be conducted by the official Presidential Search Committee.
