LETTER: Police busts on parties need not be aggressive

Editor,

In my three long years of college I’ve been to my fair share of parties, of which a fair share have been broken up by the cops.

All of my police encounters involved with parties have been business as usual, until about 15 minutes ago. I was at a party at a good friend of mine’s house, which was incidentally broken up by the cops. No big deal, right? After the cops ask everyone under 21 to leave and they do, they then asked everyone to leave.

My friend requested that the over-21 persons remain, but the police disagreed. Since my friend was arrested three days ago as part of the peaceful anti-war protests, he feared for his permanent record, so he complied.

In the parking lot, one of the police officers felt it very necessary to accelerate so greatly as to peel out the tires on his immaculate squad car up a very steep hill and drive away at an estimated 40 mph. This action almost killed one of the partygoers by practically running him over.

This was a very perfect example of the police’s testosterone and egotistic nature, to express authority over the peons.

The message of this letter in all is that the police don’t have to behave like this, why the unnecessary display of horsepower? Just act civil, dear officers, and we will be much more compliant when you break up our parties, instead of preventing real crimes like murder and rape.
