COLUMN: ASUNM positions opening

by Jennifer Onuska

ASUNM President

Do you want to make a difference on campus? Do you want to meet new people? Do you want to get involved and have fun?

Well, it is time for you to apply for an ASUNM position. There are several appointed ASUNM positions that are opening up for the next academic year 2003-04. Some of them are paid positions and others are volunteer-based.

You don't have to run for a position to be a part of ASUNM. For instance, in the executive branch, students may apply to be the presidential aide assisting the president in his or her duties; or the attorney general, who is responsible for interpreting ASUNM law for the executive branch; or the Web master, who designs and upkeeps the ASUNM Web site.

The seven executive agencies also provide an outstanding way to get involved. The first executive agency, Community Experience, is in charge of facilitating service for the University and puts on the Spring Storm. Students may apply for director, assistant of the Community Experience or marketing chairperson, projects chairman, event chairperson, recruitment chairperson and fundraising chairperson for the Spring Storm.

The crafts studio provides workspace, materials and access to equipment for students to produce, display, or sell artwork at a minimal cost. Students may apply to be director or assistant director.

The Elections Commission is responsible for the operation of ASUNM elections, including the Homecoming King and Queen election. Students who are interested may apply to be the elections chairperson or sit on the Elections Commission.

The Homecoming Committee plans, coordinates and directs an annual Homecoming Week program during the fall semester. Students may apply to be the Homecoming chairperson or assistant chairperson. In addition, students may apply to be a committee chairperson pertaining to the week's events.

The Southwest Film Center (SWFC) schedules film entertainment for the academic school year. Students may apply to be director or assistant director.

Student Special Events (SSE) provides concerts, speakers, spring and fall festivals, including FIESTAS and community outreach activities. Students may apply to be the executive director, promotions director, marketing director, cultural director, or speakers director.

The Lobby Committee presents proposed legislation and viewpoints of the student body that affects students, as directed by the president. Students are welcome to apply for lobby director or assistant director.

All of these agencies will be re-located in the New Student Union Building, being highly visible and providing great service to the student body.

The judicial branch also provides an array of positions. Student may volunteer to sit on the court as either one of the four associate justices or the chief justice. The student court hears cases arising within ASUNM laws, money allocations and actions of the various bodies and committees of ASUNM government.

Students may also volunteer to sit on several Faculty Senate joint committees. These committees include: Admissions & Registration Committee, Athletic Council, Campus Planning Committee, Campus Safety & Security Committee, Curricula Committee, Computer Use Committee, Library Committee, Library Student Advisory Board, Planning Council, KUNM Radio Board, Student Conduct Committee, Student Fee Review Board, Student Publications Board, University Honors Council, Teaching Enhancement Council, Student Union Building Board, Scholarships and Loans.

The term for all of these positions is the same for the president who appointed the student. However, the student court serves its full term, disregarding this rule.

Students may apply for these positions starting today, April 21. Applications may be picked up in the ASUNM office in Student Services, Room 262. The deadline for applications will be May 23 at 5 p.m. in the ASUNM office.

Come and be part of the ASUNM team!
