COLUMN: Variety of events planned

by Heather Gabel

ASUNM Vice President

We are closing in on the final stretch of yet another school year.

And with this comes a lot of excitement and stress. I know that all of you are probably being piled with all your last-minute assignments and tests and some of you, like myself, are trying to get ready to graduate and figure out what you are going to do with your life now that you don't have to register for classes next fall. But with a month left in the 2002-03 school year we are still in full swing at ASUNM.

ASUNM, Student Special Events, Agora and SEPAS will be sponsoring another free self-defense class on Wednesday, April 30, from 6-9 p.m. To register, please call SEPAS at 277-6138. There are a limited number of spaces available, so call soon. The location will be given to you when you register. The last one was a great success and I hope that many more students will take advantage of this life saving event.

Every spring semester the ASUNM Elections Commission oversees the election of the ASUNM president, vice president and 10 senator positions and the time has come once again.

As members of the undergraduate student body, we need to take the time to research the candidates so that we can elect senators that are representative of the entire student body and that are motivated to get things accomplished. As a member of the student body, I encourage you to read about the candidates in the Daily Lobo this week and get out and vote on Election Day, Wednesday, April 16.

In addition to the candidate elections and the constitutional amendments, is also a student opinion poll on the ballot. This poll asks the students if they would be in favor of a "prep week" at UNM. Prep week would be held the 15th week of classes (the week before finals) each semester. During this week, no new material could be introduced, no tests could be given and no assignments could be due.

This week would be designated as a time to review for finals. Classes would be held on their regular schedule but this time would be devoted to reviews for final exams. Many college campuses around the country have prep weeks or "dead weeks," but there is currently no policy concerning this issue at UNM.

We would like to know the students' opinion on this topic before we pursue it any further. So please come out and vote to let your voices be heard on Wednesday, April 16. The polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the SRC Commons, Anderson School of Management, Mitchell Hall, College of Nursing, South Campus, Dane Smith Hall, Centennial Library; and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Zimmerman Library and Johnson Center. We hope to see you there.

If you are an undergraduate chartered student organization and have not asked for an appropriation this semester, your last chance to turn one in is on Friday, April 25, at noon. An appropriation bill allocates money to a specific organization, for a specific purpose and for a specific amount.

It is the policy of the Senate to fund only those organizations that have been chartered by the Student Activities Office and only one time per semester. Appropriation bills include funding to student organizations for trips (seminars, workshops, conferences, etc.) as deemed appropriate by the Finance Committee, unexpected expenses, or one-time equipment purchases.

To apply for an appropriation, you will need to pick up a form at the ASUNM Senate office in the Student Services Center, Rm. 262, complete the form and return it to the ASUNM office by Friday April 25 at noon.

Your organization will then need to have a representative at the last committee meeting of the semester, which will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva Lecture Hall.

The appropriation will then be sent to full Senate with a recommendation and will be voted on during the last full Senate meeting on Wednesday, May 7, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva Lecture Hall. Once approved by the full Senate it will be sent to the ASUNM president for approval. The funds that you receive will be available to your organization to spend until the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2003.

ASUNM Student Special Events is sponsoring The Donnas and Mistletoe in a free concert (to UNM students only) on Johnson Field from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

It is also sponsoring Fiestas on May 3. It will feature Simple Plan, Fertile Soil, Guajira and other great live performances along with many booths offering food and fun from noon to 7 p.m. These are two great opportunities to kick back, relax and enjoy great music under the spring sun. We hope to see you there.

I know there is a lot going on in these last few weeks but I hope that you will participate in the events mention above and will enjoy the final stretch of the 2003 spring semester.

Remember that you are always welcome to join us at our next full Senate meeting on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva Lecture Hall.
