Letter: One grade for group projects unfair to all

Editor,

I just turned in a group project that my team of three had ample time to complete.

One member of the group was in tears. I am angry and in shock. One member insisted that "he would make it right." This pledge was made to us despite ample advance warnings from our professor of "no excuses, no exceptions." This group "partner" turned in the bulk of his work, which we needed in the very beginning, two hours before the project was due.

One of our team members is an honors student. I admit she contributed the most work. Despite her efforts, she is now in jeopardy of not being accepted to a highly selective program because of the way this will affect her grade and GPA.

I feel group projects with group grading are inherently discriminatory against high achievers. Every group project I have been involved in at UNM has negatively affected my grade in the class that it was required. I can say this because every group project I have participated in has earned a grade lower than the grade I received in that specific class and my GPA.

I would favor school policy changes and laws passed against its usage and legitimacy. Group projects are fine; group grading is discrimination.
