Campuses in the news

Hurricane gives LSU students a vacation

BATON ROUGE, La. (U-WIRE) - The first thing that popped into the minds of most Louisiana State University students after hearing that there was a hurricane brewing in the Gulf of Mexico last week was not fear - but rather sheer joy.

With Hurricane Ivan threatening Louisiana, the University had no choice but to close campus last Wednesday and Thursday, causing many students to plan their impromptu vacation with parties and relaxation.

The weather turned out to be quite the opposite from what was expected, and students were able to actually enjoy the weather since Ivan shifted its track.

Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, said President Bush has exaggerated progress in Iraq while ignoring signs from within his own administration that the U.S. mission there is in increasing danger of failure.

He said with the pace of U.S. and Iraqi combat casualties accelerating, and foreign support for the occupation limited, staying the course under Bush's policy could lead to a "war with no end in sight."

Ohio State sexual assault case back in court

KENT, Ohio (U-WIRE) - On Feb. 22, 2002, a woman who is now a Kent State University student alleged she was raped in one of the residence halls at Ohio State University. Both the woman and the accused man were freshmen at Ohio State at the time of the incident.

Though the rape allegedly happened in 2002, the criminal case against Jeremy Goldstein of Beachwood, Ohio, will be held next Monday due in large part to a mishandling of the allegation by Ohio State, according to the filed complaint. The case will be heard in the Franklin County Criminal Court in Columbus, Ohio.

The woman in the case also filed a lawsuit against Ohio State, seeking $6 million in damages.

BU to sell Providence community radio station

BOSTON (U-WIRE) - Boston University is selling the license to Rhode Island's only public radio station, WRNI, much to the dismay of the local community and Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch

Lynch sent WBUR General Manager Jane Christo a letter requesting BU stop the radio station's sale until the community's concerns are addressed.

BU gave notice of its plans to put the Providence station up for sale last Friday, upsetting many community members because of the public's financial support.

BU-owned WBUR, WRNI's parent FM radio station, has not given a set price.

Penn State cheerleaders charged with assault

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (U-WIRE) - The State College Police Department said Tuesday that Pennsylvania State University cheerleaders were possibly involved in an assault Friday afternoon.

The assault was reported at about 3:30 p.m. at the Student Bookstore.

State College police reported that a woman walking through the area of the Student Book Store had refused the complimentary stickers the Penn State cheerleaders were passing out to those walking by the store.

Police said that upon leaving the store, the woman exited through a door farther away from the squad to avoid it. A group of people dressed in Penn State cheerleading uniforms then approached her and covered her with about 20 stickers despite her protests, police said.
