Weekly meeting turns to art

Tonight artistic expression will shake the walls of the Lobo Theatre.

Cru, an organization affiliated with Campus Crusade for Christ, will host its first-ever art rumble.

Art supplies will be provided, and doors are open to anyone who wants to share his or her artistic side.

"We put on a coffee house every week where people of varied spiritual beliefs get together and talk," said Peter Lively, who helped organize the event. "Art is the topic this week, but instead of discussing it, we are just going to do it."

A short independent film festival will also take place, where Lively will show off a film he created last year, which he said is an autobiographical piece.

"Growing up, I imagined myself a warrior and saw myself through different characters I played through video games," he said. "It's kind of an autobiography through video games."

Last year, Cru held an art contest revolving around the existence of the soul, and it was a success, sparking the idea of tonight's rumble, said Matt Kelley, director of Cru.

"We are created in the image of God, and God is an artist," he said. "This is about exploring that idea."

Kelley said he may play the guitar and sing, as well as run short story collaborations where someone starts a story with a sentence and people add to it. Dancers and poets will also be at the event.

Kelley said they discussed displaying their work somewhere long term, but said the event is more about the act of creating rather than the finished product.

Lively said Cru puts forth topics such as homelessness, the AIDS crisis or problems people have with religion during its weekly discussions.

"We like it to be an open and free discussion, a safe place where people can express their opinions, whether they come from a religious background or they don't," he said.

He said so far, the discussions haven't been too heated.

"I think people are passionate," he said. "But arguments aren't really a problem."
