Column: Brit schools Yanks on fashion

by Matthew Paul Bailey

I believe you simply cannot trust people who have bad fashion sense.

Fashion is everything. Everywhere we go, every person we look at we judge on their fashion - consciously or subconsciously.

Because I am British, and Europeans are renowned for their choice of garments, I feel a duty to help the world with this important issue.

I had my stereotypes of American fashion solidified when I arrived here in August. Americans have fashion. They believe in it. But it only seems to serve as a continuation of high school cliques. There are hip-hop kids with their baggy jeans and flat baseball caps, the rock kids, divided up depending on the kind of rock music they listen to. Then there are kids who shop at the malls, so-called "high street" fashion.

Many subdivisions of these various groups exist, but these are the three basic ones.

I am not against people dressing according to their musical tastes, but this serves as a barrier, even a shield, against interaction between the groups. This is a shame, because fashion has the power to be a unifier of all people from all nations.

The key to good fashion is diversity, and the element of surprise is most important. You should not dress the same every day. You should dress depending on your mood.

If I have just been bumping out some Black Star or Kanye West, I will slip on my Roc-a-Wear jeans and a sophisticated polo shirt. If I am feeling somewhat alternative, I will squeeze my nimble frame into some nice, tight black Levis and a black shirt.

But, my friends, the key to fashion success is to mix the styles - though you must have the personality to carry off such a hefty task. If you can do this and still feel good inside and, more importantly, look good on the outside, then you have succeeded in fashion and in life.

To finish these musings on fashion, I shall leave you with a little tip to fashion excellence.

This is my secret, and I have decided to share it with the world: Before you go to bed, the last thought you should have is what you are going to wear tomorrow. That way, as you sleep, fashion will be in your dreams, and you can wake up confident that the world will love you.
