Unite sweeps ASUNM election

Members of the Unite slate celebrated their victory in the ASUNM election Wednesday night by listening to country music.

"My whole slate is with me right now - we're excited," newly elected ASUNM president Brittany Jaeger said.

Jaeger received 925 votes. Her opponent, Alex Hughes, received got 541.

The Unite slate swept the election, filling the vice president slot and 11 senator positions. The 11th candidate will take Jaeger's senate seat for the remainder of her term, which ends in December.

Hughes said the Howl slate didn't put enough fliers at locations besides the SUB and Zimmerman Library.

"We got our asses handed to us," he said, adding he thought Jaeger will make a good president for the student body next year.

He said he was not disappointed and both campaigns were active.

"We were not able to turn out enough voters," he said.

Lauren Haggerty, elections chair, said 1,475 votes were cast Wednesday. Last spring, 760 people voted in the election, when it was only one presidential and one vice presidential candidate.

According to the ASUNM constitution, all members of the undergraduate student body can vote in the election. As of fall 2004, there were 18,027 undergraduate students enrolled at UNM.

She said more people voted in this election because two slates and three independent candidates ran in this election.

"With more candidates, there is increased voter turnout," she said.

Jaeger said it was the diversity of the Unite slate that allowed them to sweep the election.

"We represent the entire student body," she said.

She said there are members of the slate who are commuter students, some live in dorms and some are involved in ASUNM.

Jaeger said the Unite slate expected to do well and made an effort to get out and talk to students.

She said her goals as president are to get students involved by making sure they know what's going on, making sure people understand why there needs to be a tuition increase, getting a student section at The Pit, talking to the faculty about dead week and making sure the legislative and executive branches work together.
