Staff Report
Becca Barras, former All-American diver at UNM, finished in the top 10 in both diving events at the World University Games on Thursday as a member of the Canadian national team.
On the 3-meter board, Barras scored 489.45 points and finished ninth overall out of 33 competitors.
On to the 1-meter board, she finished in 10th place out of 29 divers with a score of 230.61.
The World University Games, held in Izmir, Turkey, was a meet comprised of the world's best athletes who graduated from a university within the past year. Barras qualified for the event after earning All-American honors at the 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with her 15th-place finish on the 1-meter board. She also finished 19th on the 3-meter board at the NCAA Championships.
Barras solidified her place on the Canadian national team by finishing ninth overall at the Summer Senior National Championships in London, Ontario. At that meet, she finished seventh in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard.
Having used up her eligibility in 2005, Barras will train in New Mexico for the next year while finishing up her degree.
Barras was the first female diving All-American in UNM history. She also had plenty of other success both on and off the diving boards in her four years as a Lobo.
In all, she won Mountain West Conference Diver of the Week 17 times throughout her career.
Barras was a seven-time all-conference performer and did well enough in the classroom to be named to the MWC all-academic team three times.
Barras also competed at the NCAA Championships in her junior season, finishing 18th on the 3-meter board and 21st on the 1-meter board.
