Letter: Angry, abusive radicals don't represent Christians

Editor,

This letter is to the many people who were at UNM on Aug. 30 and were verbally attacked by the very abusive and radical Christian family that visited our campus.

This family, preaching in the name of Jesus Christ, attacked everyone that walked by. I know, because I was a victim.

As I walked by, a girl yelled, "Take this flier about Jesus!" I'm a Christian, so I took the flier. I told her I know Jesus, that I'm an active Christian and that I love my church. With angry eyes she said, "You know about Jesus, but you don't know Jesus." She then told me I wasn't a Christian, that church is a stupid organization and that anyone who attends church is a self-seeking hypocrite.

I began to politely explain to her that she was mistaken and was unfairly judging Christianity, but she turned away and ignored me. Upset by our first conversation, I decided to go back after class. As I approached her, I asked for a moment of her time. She said, "I have no time to argue with you." She even refused to shake my hand, saying, "I will not shake your hand. We have absolutely nothing in common."

She then started to yell, "You're a hypocrite! Hell awaits you because of your lack of obedience to God! You can keep talking, but I'm just going to ignore you."

During this confrontation, I could hear a man telling another girl that she wasn't a Christian because she was going to college and paying for people to tell her what to think. The man didn't even know what the girl was studying and his words were obviously upsetting her.

I know there were many others who were also upset by this group, and for that I am sorry.

As I walked away, I read the flier I had been given, titled "Something Called Love." Those Christians did not show love and most certainly did not represent Jesus. The Bible says love is patient, love is kind and love is not rude. Would Jesus scream in someone's face, "You're going to hell?" Would Jesus tell someone he was just going to ignore them? Would Jesus say, "I won't talk to you, because we have nothing in common?"

True Christians are not angry people yelling about hell. Christianity is about sincere love demonstrated through words and actions. It is about the message of life, hope, and most importantly, Jesus' love, not hatred, anger and damnation.

Don't confuse such Christians with Christ himself. This group showed no love, no compassion and certainly no Christ. They severely misinterpret the Bible, which says to go into the world and tell people about Jesus' love.
