Letter: More coaches like McKay needed in the world

Editor,

I lived in Albuquerque for 17 years before moving to South Dakota to get my teenage son away from the gangs. I left my heart in the Southwest and still follow up with the news through the Internet.

When I read the article about how the ACLU is trying to intervene with Coach Ritchie McKay talking to the players about the Lord, I felt I needed to get involved. I was saved in 1991 when I was at a low point in my life, because someone had the courage to tell me about the Lord.

I wish my son had a coach like him - maybe we wouldn't have had to leave Albuquerque. It is a shame when we have such a dire lack of godly men that the few who stand up for what is right are being limited and judged.

It is our God-given duty to "go into all the world and spread the good news." I have the utmost respect for a man like Coach McKay, who is not ashamed of our savior. It is written that if we deny him here on earth, he will deny us when our time comes.

I am also perturbed about the ACLU calling this "religion." There is a huge difference between religion and a personal, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Religion is man's feeble attempt to reach God, whoever he may be. What we have is a personal, life-changing relationship with the way, the truth and the life, and nobody comes to the father except through him.

This is the best news in the world, and there are many people who are discouraged and live without hope, trying to fill the void in their hearts with destructive things instead of with God's love. We need more Coach McKays in the world, and he needs all the support there is from his brothers and sisters in Christ. God bless him.
