Editor,
Richard Berthold's problem is his ego. Thinking that students are deprived without his presence in the classroom is ridiculous. The University has every right to deny him a part-time teaching position.
The University is not in business of employing radical thinkers. They are in the business of employing qualified teachers. If Berthold has issues with fixing problems with his performance, he should not be offered a position.
Most students pick classes based on scheduling and necessity. If they need the class, they will take it. If it fits their schedule, they will take it. The majority of students who take classes take them because of the class, not the instructor.
If Berthold is such a wonderful instructor, he should have no problem finding a position at a school where freedom of speech is more than an illusion.
After all, why would Berthold want a job at a "second-rate university?"
