The UNM men's golf team clawed its way to an eighth-place finish on the last day of its first home tournament.
The Lobos started out Saturday in 11th place after Friday's first round of the William H. Tucker Invitational tournament.
The University of Nevada-Las Vegas won the tournament with Brigham Young University coming in third place, 10 strokes behind UNLV. UNM shot a 15-over-par, with senior Jay Choi leading the team with a 17th-place finish at 1-over-par.
Texas Tech, Baylor and Colorado completed the top five. BYU and UNLV are both Mountain West Conference foes.
Choi said the Runnin' Rebels will be the Lobos' top rival this year.
"UNLV is a tough competitor, especially since they're in our conference," he said.
UNLV's Andres Gonzalez won the individual title, with a score of 9-under-par, as he snuck by teammate Jared Texter for a two-stroke win.
Mark Anderson, who tied for 23rd at 2-over-par, said the Lobos have to show up with their top game week in and week out, or else they can forget about winning tournaments.
"UNLV are always good and BYU is typically good. If we don't play well there is a lot of quality teams that can beat us," he said.
