Sports in brief

Cross Country

Cross country head coach Matt Henry held his top runners from competition Saturday at the Kachina Classic to let them rest for the Stanford Invitational next weekend.

That didn't stop those who represented UNM from faring well at the meet held in Las Cruces.

Junior Brandon Vigil led the men's team to a third-place finish after placing 12th individually. Vigil completed the 7,400-meter race on the New Mexico State University golf course with a time of 24:27. It was Vigil's first cross country race since 2003 after redshirting the 2004 season.

As a team, the Lobos trailed runner-up Eastern New Mexico and winner UTEP in the 10-team field. The meet was dominated by UTEP as their top four runners finished 1-4 overall.

On the women's side, sophomore Sheyenne Lewis led UNM to a fourth-place finish. Lewis finished the women's 5k course in 20:12 and placed 11th overall, the highest she has ever finished in a collegiate race.

UTEP won the women's meet. The runner-up was NMSU while Western New Mexico came in third.

Volleyball

The Lobo volleyball team won the Hilton Albuquerque Classic Championship on Saturday, defeating Syracuse 6-2.

The win improves the Lobos' record to 8-2 overall on the season. The Lobos now have a six-game winning streak. It was also the second-straight tournament victory for the team, the first time a UNM team has won consecutive tournaments since 1994.

Syracuse made the Lobos work for the victory in what was a back and forth five-game match.

UNM dropped game one 32-30, but bounced back to win game two 30-20. The Lobos took gamwe three 30-21, before Syracuse answered with a 30-14 victory in game four. In the decisive fifth game, Syracuse took a 2-0 lead, but the Lobos rallied to win 15-11 and clinch the tournament championship.

UNM's record of 8-2 is the fifth-best start a Lobo team has ever had. It is also the best record through 10 games that the volleyball team has recorded under head coach Kelley McKee.

Women's Soccer

The UNM women's soccer team ended a battle with No. 22-ranked Arizona with a tie on Sunday afternoon.

Arizona got off to a quick start and scored in the 35th minute. Mallory Miller was able to get a shot past UNM goalie Kristen Winters, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Arizona held on to the lead for most of the game, but in the 83rd minute Lobo Kellee Hafner sent a shot over the head of Arizona goalkeeper McCall Smith to grab the tie.

With the tie, the Lobos now have a record of 2-2-3, while Arizona stands at 4-1-2.
