2005 mayoral election voter guide: Brad Winter

Voter Guide

Crime

I believe that we do not have enough officers on the street to fight crime. Community policing is a great idea but we built the sub stations and then did not staff them. We must improve morale at our police department, put more officers on the street and fully staff our neighborhood sub stations.

Eminent domain

I believe the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding eminent domain is very dangerous and am opposed to it. I sponsored legislation to protect both homeowners and business owners from unwarranted government seizure given the recent ruling.

Minimum wage increase proposal

I am opposed to raising the minimum wage at the local level. I believe it will create an un-level playing field and drive jobs away from Albuquerque.

Public transportation

We need to improve our public transportation system. We must expand Rapid Ride to the West Side of Albuquerque. We need to have better transportation for seniors going to and from our senior centers and then to points of interest. We need to make sure that students have better access to safe and dependable transportation.

Alcohol sales at all-ages shows

I believe that if a business owner is following the law and wants to take responsibility for serving alcohol at all age shows, than they should be able to. However, we need to make sure that we have enough police officers available to ensure that these businesses are following the laws that are already on the books.

Environmental issues

Water will continue to be one of our greatest challenges. I will continue to support water conservation and Bosque restoration programs.

Helping homeless and indigent in Albuquerque

The city is already providing service for the homeless in Albuquerque. As mayor, I will review all of our programs, assess where we can do better, and make it happen.

Improving city services

I believe that we need to refocus our tax dollars on basic services like roads and public safety, instead of funding special amenities first.

Improving Downtown

As mayor, I will continue to support Downtown revitalization efforts. I believe that the city can and should be a good partner to private business to make this happen. I would like to see an arena built Downtown and will work to make this happen.

City taxes

Under the current administration, spending has gone through the roof. The Mayor toyed with a tax cut earlier in the year but opted instead to continue spending. As mayor, I will institute real spending reform, requiring voter approval for all tax increases, limiting spending to no more than the rate of inflation plus population, and establishing a rainy-day fund to see us through years when our tax collection is down.
