Letter: Campus computers are for education, not cyberfolly

Editor,

I was at Zimmerman Library the other day, and I waited about 30 minutes for a computer to open up. Then I was in the lower level of the SUB today, waiting to use a computer.

As I looked over people's shoulders I could see instant messages, chat rooms and personals. I saw some 10-year-old kid cruising through Yahoo's TV listings. There is almost always a line of people waiting for someone to finish monkeying around on a computer.

I'm a poor, hungry student. I have no computer at home and am hard-pressed to find computer time to do my homework - especially the online tutorial work. I stood in line at the Lobo Lab and watched some guy groom a response to a personal ad for 20 minutes. The woman next to me - while I was writing this letter - was playing a game and instant messaging somebody.

Look, people: Go prey, date, play, gossip, gather wool or whatever time-wasting cyberfolly you're into at home. I'm here to get an education.

The fools who are using up computer time to simply amuse themselves are wasting my time and my money. Get a PlayStation, go clubbing, whatever you have to do to meet your amusement quota - just stop doing it on campus.

Facebook, MySpace or RuneQuest really have no place when people are standing in line to do homework on the computers they paid to be able to access.
