Forward carries game in victory over Texas

Staff Report

The UNM women's basketball team won its biggest game of the season Friday, upsetting 12th-ranked Texas 76-68.

Dionne Marsh played a huge role in the victory, putting up 24 points and leading the Lobos to a 3-1 record. The Longhorn defense played physical with Marsh, and she made them pay. Thirteen of her points came from the free-throw line.

Abbie Letz also shot well from the foul line. The senior was 10-of-12 from the stripe, and she finished with 13 points. Guard Katie Montgomery also scored 13 points in the victory.

Sophomore guard Brandi Kimble had a well-rounded game, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Lobos were coming off a tough loss to No. 25-ranked Oklahoma. This time it was the other way around. UNM trailed Texas 35-32 at halftime, but played much stronger in the second half.

A big reason for the turnaround was the shooting percentage. In the first half, UNM shot a lowly 30 percent from the field.

The team was much more proficient in the second half, shooting 61 percent. UNM had a solid game defensively, holding the Texas offense to 35 percent shooting from the field.

It was a rare home loss for Texas, who fell to 0-1. The Longhorns were 44-1 in their previous 45 home games.
