Ski teams sweep into action

Staff Report

The UNM ski team got its season going this weekend, competing at the FIS Super Tour World Cup.

The Lobos traveled to West Yellowstone, Mont., for the event and got a glimpse of what the team will look like this season. Junior Dirk Grimm placed fifth in the men's 12-kilometer freestyle event. Grimm was forced to ski in the B-final because he fell in his first run but still had a strong showing. At an event that featured members of the U.S. Ski Team, Grimm was the lone collegiate skier to finish in the top eight.

Freshman Casey Dyck also raced well, but caught a tough break. He finished just half a second from qualifying for the top 16 and missed a chance to compete in the finals.

Junior Jedd Young finished 39th while freshman Rick Grahn placed 69th in the event.

The women's team did not place anyone in the top 30, but some of the skiers finished in a close pack.

In the women's 12-kilometer freestyle event, sophomore Marit Rognmo finished 32nd.

She was followed by freshman Crystin Jaques in 33rd and sophomore Tiffany Callahan in 34th.

The action continued Saturday and Grimm had another strong race placing 10th overall and third among collegiate skiers.

Young placed 40th overall, while Dyck finished 78th in Saturday's race.

Rognmo led the women again finishing Saturday in 12th. Jaques finished 19th followed by Callahan in 45th.

The ski team returns to action next weekend in Breckenridge, Colo.
