Trivia game a poor excuse for entertainment

by Abel Horwitz

Daily Lobo

I sat down to take a sober look at "Who Rules?" and regretted it immediately.

"Who Rules?" is a trivia game that's played by answering multiple choice questions on your television. In the same vein as "You Don't Know Jack," the popular late '90s take on the video game quiz show, "Who Rules?" comes complete with a sassy host and some random questions. The only difference is that "You Don't Know Jack" was innovative and funny while "Who Rules?" is boring.

The game is voiced by Patrick Warburton, who played Puddy on "Seinfeld" and voices Joe Swanson on "Family Guy," which is just about the only positive thing this game has to offer. The novelty of "Who Rules?" wears off quickly, and there's not much left over.

The game is played much like a standard quiz show. You're asked multiple choice trivia questions based on randomly selected categories ranging from politics, celebrities, sports or newsworthy events of the last 100 years. The game proudly boasts a randomizing system promising that you'll never get the same game twice, giving you nine categories and more than 800 questions to choose from. During my play I was only asked questions from four categories, which added to the frustration of game play.

Granted, "Who Rules?" does have an interesting concept. It can be fun to sit down with your friends and compete at trivia games. The game is simple, requiring only a DVD player, a remote control and a television to play. "Who Rules?" is trying to sell itself as something you'd do at a small party. The rules are easy to learn and there's no board or game pieces to buy.

The game costs around $25, though I can't imagine why anyone would want to spend that kind of money on something that, at most, would be fun to play once or twice. It isn't exciting enough to sit down and answer standard, unfunny trivia questions.

What made a game like "You Don't Know Jack" so fun to play was that the questions were wacky and the game play had some interesting twists to it. "Who Rules?" is just an average quiz game with a somewhat-entertaining celebrity host. There is some humor to the whole thing, I liked the fake cheesy prizes that I won for answering questions correctly ("You win...a Betamax player!"), and occasionally Warburton comes off with a good one-liner, but that in no way justifies shelling out $25 for this game.
