Aztecs shoot hopes for road win

Staff Report

The UNM men's basketball team fell short of winning its first road game of the season, losing 75-69 to San Diego State University.

The Lobos (12-7, 3-3) were unable to pull off the victory against the Aztecs (13-6, 6-1) Wednesday night after falling behind 50-35 with 17:51 remaining in the second half.

Behind Mark Walters' 25 points, UNM was able to make it close late in the game. The team went on a 12-2 run to make it 52-47 with 12:43 remaining.

The Lobos were able to pull within three points after a David Chiotti basket and trailed 60-57 with 8:01 remaining. That is the closest UNM would get, however, as the Aztecs pulled away from that point on.

With the win, SDSU stayed on top of the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos remain winless on the road, falling to 0-7. They are 12-0 at The Pit and the only team in Division I to have lost every game on the road and won every game at home.

Walters' 25 points were a game high, and the Lobos had four players in double figures. Tony Danridge and Kyle Prochaska scored 11 points each, and Chiotti added 10.

The performance of those players was not enough, however, as five Aztecs scored 10 or more points in the game.

Marcus Slaughter led San Diego State with 18 points, while Kyle Spain added 14 points. Mohamed Abukar scored 12 and Brandon Heath chipped in 10. John Sharper came off the bench to score 12 points for the Aztecs.

As a team, SDSU shot a blistering 61 percent from the field. The Aztecs were even more deadly from beyond the arc, converting 69 percent of their three-point field goals.
